Saint Anastasia the Pharmakolytria, “Deliverer from Potions” was a Roman citizen. Her father was a pagan but her Christian mother secretly baptized and raised her Christian. St. Chrysogonus was also her teacher and advisor. After her mother’s death, her father gave her in marriage to a noble Roman named Publius, a pagan who abused her after he found out she was Christian. After Publius's untimely death she distributed her property to the poor and visited and cared for Christian prisoners. She was captured, imprisoned, condemned to death and burned alive during the Diocletian persecution. She is one of the 7 women mentioned in the Canon of the Mass and in Rome today, the second Christmas Mass is celebrated at St. Anastasia parish.
