Saint Peter To Rot is the first canonized saint from Papua New Guinea. He served as a catechist in his village and was entrusted with the leadership of the local parish during World War II when Imperial Japanese forces occupied the region and imprisoned Catholic missionaries. He was martyred in 1945 for continuing his apostolate despite a ban imposed by the Japanese.
