Saint John of Capistrano, a Franciscan friar and Catholic priest, was born in Italy during turbulent times. He studied and practiced both secular and canon law and was appointed Governor of Perugia. When war broke out he was thrown in prison while working on a peaceful settlement and it was here he had his conversion.  With St. James of the Marches, he entered the Franciscans and studied under St. Bernardine of Siena. Famous as a preacher, theologian, and inquisitor, John earned the nickname ’the Soldier Saint’ when he led a crusade to free Belgrade, which had been invaded. He survived the battle but fell victim to the bubonic plague on October 23, 1456.
