Father Stanley Rother was born into a farming family in Oklahoma. He became a priest, overcoming the struggles in the seminary, in 1963. Fr. was sent to Guatemala as a missionary, in 1968, to serve the indigenous people. There he built farm co-ops, a school, a hospital, worked with the Catholic radio station to catechize remote villages. His life was one of an ordinary man, lived with kindness, selflessness, joy, and attentive presence for his people. The violent civil war turmoil escalated and he was killed in 1981. His heart and mason jars of his blood were incorrupt 10 years after his death. He is the 1st American born martyr.
