Blessed Joan Roig, a layman martyred while protecting the Eucharist during the Spanish Civil War. He was entrusted to distribute the Holy Eucharist in Barcelona to those in need. As a model of Christian life, he went to daily Mass, meditating, and practicing piety. In 1936, the Libertarian Youth patrol killed him with his last words being “May God forgive you as I forgive you” and “Viva Cristo Rey.” He was one of 2000 martyred during the Spanish Civil War because of “hatred of the faith.”
