Saint Alfred the Great was a scholar and warrior monarch. He translated classical works to English, established a court school that brought in foreign scholars, and made laws with no distinctions between English and Welsh subjects, a first.  His reign was from 871-899, spent mostly in conflict with the Vikings and Danes. He is one of the two monarchs in England given the title “the Great.”
