Saint José Gregorio Hernández was a Venezuelan physician and scientist, called “The Doctor of the Poor.” He studied medicine in Paris, specializing in microbiology, physiology, and bacteriology, among other specialities. He wanted to become a priest, but due to poor health, he became a Secular Franciscan instead. In his medical practice, he treated the poor for free, even buying medicines for them with his own money. Saint Jose died after being struck by a car while bringing medicine to a poor neighbor. He was canonized by Pope Leo XIV in 2025.
