Saint Heribert of Cologne was born and educated in Worms, Germany. He became a diocesan priest and was appointed bishop in 994. Emperor Otto III named him Chancellor and Canon of the Cathedral in Cologne, where he served until the emperor's death. He subsequently served Henry II—initially with some contention, but later with mutual respect. Throughout his life, Heribert served the poor and lived an intense spiritual life of deep humility. During a severe drought in Cologne, he led a procession to St. Severinus Church. Upon praying at the altar and rising to his feet, rain began to fall, saving the harvest. Heribert died of a fever in 1021 and was canonized in 1075.
