Saint Sophia of Thrace, the daughter of pious Christian parents, married a wealthy man when she came of age and became a model wife and mother of 6 children and lived a virtuous life. When she was 34, a plague swept over the land and one by one took the lives of all 6 of her children and her husband. Heartbroken, she continued in her great devotion to God and found her calling in opening her home to caring for others. Her hospitality extended to all and when adults sought refuge in her home she poured them a glass of rare vintage wine from her urn which miraculously never went empty. Over a period of 20 years, she adopted more than one hundred children and raised them all in the love of God.
