Cardinal Van Thuan was born into a Vietnamese family with a long Catholic tradition and was related to martyrs going as far back as 1698. He was ordained a priest in 1958, consecrated a Bishop in 1967 (His motto was Gaudium et Spes, joy and hope) and appointed Coadjutor Archbishop in 1975, 1 week before the Communists took over Saigon. They saw him as a threat and imprisoned him for 13 years, 9 of which were in solitary confinement. He wrote messages of hope to the faithful, celebrated Mass with drops of water and wine using his hands as a chalice, and saw his prison guards as family. Throughout his life he was a model of Christian hope and forgiveness, actively surrendering all to Our Lord and proclaiming Christ’s love.
