Blessed Father Pino Puglisi came from a humble, working-class family in Sicily. He became a priest to fight crime and corruption that he experienced growing up in a Mafia controlled country.  Father encouraged the youth of his parish to stay in school, work hard in good jobs and stay close to the Church. The Mafia couldn’t intimidate or bribe him, thus he became their target. In 1993, he greeted two hitmen outside the Church, saying “I’ve been expecting you.” He was killed by a single shot.  Following his death, there was a loud public outcry for justice against organized crime.
