Saint Pelagia the Penitent was a beautiful pagan actress and exotic dancer who led a disorderly life. When by chance she heard the preaching of St. Nonnus, she was moved to repentance, sold all she had, and was baptized. She then lived a life of extreme asceticism as a hermitess in a cave in Jerusalem and eventually died because of her penances.
